UAAP issues 'stern warnings' to DLSU coach Topex Robinson, UP player Reyland Torres over alleged game dispute
The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has issued stern warnings to De La Salle University Head Coach Michael Christopher "Topex" Robinson and University of the Philippines student-athlete Reyland Torres for their "unsportsmanlike conduct" during the game between the two universities on Oct. 6.
In case you missed it, Robinson allegedly spat at Torres, prompting a verbal exchange between the two teams' coaching staff members.
In a statement, the UAAP's Basketball Commissioner's office said that after a thorough investigation, Torres and Robinson displayed behaviors that do not reflect the values" upheld by the organization and International Basketball Federation.
"Specifically, it was found that Mr. Torres passed in very close proximity to Coach Robinson twice. Coach Robinson, in turn, responded with language of unbecoming of a coach," the statement read.
UAAP also noted that the two individuals were warned that they would receive "stricter" penalties in case of any future violations of the organization's tournament guidelines.
Additionally, the statement emphasizes that Torres's alleged use of profane language and Robinson's supposed spitting could not be "conclusively" proven based on testimonies and available evidence during the investigation.
Nonetheless, UAAP highlighted the importance of sportsmanship, professionalism, and camaraderie throughout this year's season.
"The UAAP emphasizes that it does not condone any form of unsportsmanlike behavior, as such actions are contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie, as well as the ideals of fair play that the league intends to develop and instill through amateur sports."
After the Oct. 6 game, Robinson and Torres had different recollections of the incident. The DLSU coach denied spitting at the UP player but acknowledged that there was tension between them.
Meanwhile, Torres recalled that he was allegedly spat on by the coach when he passed by the Green Archers' bench with about three minutes left during the third quarter.
