The fashion trends that will be everywhere this cold season

Published Feb 22, 2021 8:58 am

Yesterday, Feb. 21, temperatures dropped to 19.3°C in Metro Manila, and 9°C in Baguio City—the lowest so far for the 2020-2021 northeast monsoon season. We know that days like yesterday are the only time we could wear our knits and sweaters without breaking a sweat. Instead of wearing them all day and all week, exercise your fashion skills and play with your looks.

Bundle up, ladies and gents because according to The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), this cool weather will go on for the rest of the month. Ahead, we give you the top three trends that will be dominating this sweater weather season.

Vests

Toni Gonzaga, Brittany Xavier, Aimee Song

No, sweater vests are not only for golfing. And no, they’re not made just for your grandpa. If you think vests are meant to be hidden in your baul, think again. This trend has started making its way into the closets of many since late last year, and now, it’s gaining more attention.

To wear it, pair your knit vest over a crisp white shirt like Aimee Song and Toni Gonzaga or, if you want a more relaxed look, over a sweater like Brittany Xavier—that should keep you warm and cozy. We like how Xavier and Gonzaga kept it basic in jeans, while Song went for the more masculine route in trousers and Vans.

Oversized boyfriend blazer

Sarah Lahbati, Heart Evangelista, Gabs Gibbs

These are not throwback photos from your mommy’s era, but rather a modernized version of the well-loved padded blazer. The oversized boxy blazer may be a thing of the past for some office-goers (for now), but it is a current trend that is not only great for styling but also for lightweight coverage.

If you’re scared that its masculine silhouette is going to eat you up, take cue from these stylistas to make it, well, more feminine. You can go the luxe way like Heart Evangelista, who wore an all-white ensemble, or you could pick a soft color like Sarah Lahbati’s blush pink blazer or wear it over a pencil skirt like Gabs Gibbs.

Puffed sleeves

Janine and Max Gutierrez, Jaime Xie, Jess Wilson

It seems like puff sleeves never really became out-of-fashion. Heck, it even became an indispensable part of present-day women’s fashion! As the temperature lowers, get some shoulder action going by adding pouf to your look.

You can either go for long sleeves like the Gutierrez sisters, Janine and Max, a mid-length like Bling Empire’s Jaime Xie, or a mini puff like Jess Wilson’s floral dress.
