2024 Olympics: What Team PH will be wearing in Paris
Paris is heating up!
The world's top athletes are about to light up the City of Lights and battle it out for gold from July 26 to August 11.
This year's opening ceremony is going to be exciting (and historic, too!) as athletes won't be marching on land. Instead, they'll be cruising down the Seine River, with each country having its own boat.
Of course, with such a grand stage, all eyes will be on what our Filipino athletes will be wearing. We'll see them cruising down the Seine in style, with their outfits no doubt a powerful representation of national pride.
Here's what they're going to wear to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Opening ceremony look
Filipino athletes at the opening ceremony will be heading to Paris with a statement piece. Their "Sinag" barong Tagalog uniforms, created by renowned designer Francis Libiran (who also made the outfits for the Southeast Asian Games opening ceremony in 2019 and 2023), are a fresh twist on the classic—proof that cultural pride can be undeniably chic.
The traditional Filipino garment, which is made from piña-jusi fabric, features a detachable silk organdy sling with embroidered sun rays and Pintados-inspired warrior patterns, this barong symbolizes bravery and national pride.
Francis said he was inspired by the Philippine flag and the sunrise and sunsets in the country.
"There are a lot of places in the Philippines [where] I get [inspiration from]. For one, it's always the sunset or the sunrise. So, every time I go to the Philippines, whether in Coron, Boracay, [or] Siargao, I would always watch the sunrise and the sunset. And that for me is my inspiration," he said in a video.
The designer added that he designed the piece in such a way that would stand out even from the Seine River, where the ceremony will take place.
"I made sure that when our athletes are parading in Paris, it's very visible from that angle. Even from afar, they could see the rays of the sun, the brightness of the blue, the vibrant color of the red," he said, noting that he hopes that by wearing the barong, the athletes would be proud to call themselves a Filipino.
"It represents our flag, it represents our culture, it represents being Filipino while the athletes are parading in Paris," Francis said.
The barong, kamisa, and detachable armor cost P35,000 and are available in S, M, L, and XL sizes. If you want it customized to your measurements, you could do so at P60,000.
Official uniform
The Filipino athletes will also be sporting their Village and Podium outfits with stylish adidas gear.
Bursting with national pride, the clothes' sleek, modern designs help athletes connect to their roots while offering peak performance features, said adidas country manager Anthony Frangos.
Moreover, the new athlete uniforms for all 16 of its sponsored teams incorporate bold fonts, striking colors, and cool graphics.
If you want to snag one of these yourselves, the global sports brand on July 17 released an exclusive fan merchandise collection for Team Philippines. Each uniform is emblazoned with the custom Team Philippines logo, while the t-shirts and tracksuits also feature three golden stars and a sun design.
These are found in caps (P1,200), t-shirts (P2,000), and tracksuit (P4,600).
A portion of the proceeds from the fan collection will also benefit the Philippine Olympic Committee’s Athlete Incentive Fund.
