Yay or nay? Sam Smith makes fashion statement with spade-inspired costume at BRIT Awards
Sam Smith continues to trend for their bold fashion choices, continuing their streak with an avant-garde look at the 2023 BRIT Awards.
The singer wore a custom outfit by Kerala-born menswear designer Harri at the awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 12 (Philippine time), featuring an all-black latex bodysuit shaped similar to a spade. He matched his outfit with matching black high-heel boots, a right pearl earring, and a left metal stud.
In an Instagram post, Harri explained that the costume is a direct response to hate directed towards Smith's body image.
"Sam was having a lot of hate comments recently after Unholy about their body image. This is my take on celebrating their natural form and the beauty of being one’s self. I wanted to create an image which people have never seen Sam in,” the designer said.
Other looks of Smith that gained attention recently include their red custom Valentino look by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli at the Grammy Awards, as well as their "Biggest Dress" by Tomo Koizumi.
The singer was nominated this year for two BRITs, Song of the Year and Best Pop/R&B Act, but lost in both categories to Harry Styles.
They previously criticized the award-giving body for not nominating any women for Best Artist. "Things are moving forward, but it's obvious it's not there yet. From seeing that list, there is still a long way to go," Smith told UK media.
