Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay figured in a cycling accident, saying he survived thanks to his helmet and stressing the importance of wearing one every time.

In an Instagram video on June 15, Ramsay said he has a "very important message," beginning with telling them how much he loves cycling and triathlons.

"This week, unfortunately, I had a really bad accident and it really shook me," he told his 17.4 million followers. "Honestly I’m lucky to be here."

The 57-year-old gave a shout-out to the medical professionals who attended to him and called them "amazing."

"But honestly, you’ve got to wear helmets," Ramsay told the public. “I don’t care how short the journey is. I don’t care... the fact that these helmets cost money... they’re crucial. Even with a kid’s short journey, they’ve got to wear a helmet."

He noted how lucky he is to be "standing here," and despite the "pain" and the "brutal week," he said he's "sort of getting through it."

Ramsay then lifted up his shirt and showed the bruise that covered a significant portion of his torso.

"I cannot tell you the importance of wearing a helmet," he said.

In the caption of his post, he said he's doing ok and didn't break any bones or suffer any major injuries, though noted he's "a bit bruised up looking like a purple potato."

The post also included a photo of him posing with his bike before the accident and a broken helmet and torn shirt after.

Ramsay is known for the television shows Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, and MasterChef. He also owns dozens of restaurants across the United States and the United Kingdom.
