Amanda Bynes files a petition to end her conservatorship after nearly 9 years

Amanda Bynes is seeking to end her 9-year conservatorship, which allowed her mother, Lynn Bynes, to take legal control over her medical, personal, and financial matters since 2013.

According to the She's The Man star's lawyer, David A. Esquibas, Amanda has filed a petition in Ventura County Superior Court in California to terminate the conservatorship.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Esquibias says that Amanda "believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary."

Meanwhile, Lynn's attorney, Tamar Arminak, told E! News that Lynn is "incredibly proud" of Amanda's progress.

"Lynn is so incredibly proud of the progress Amanda has made over the last few years and is so excited about the next chapter in Amanda's life," he said. "Based on the petition, and Amanda's amazing progress, she completely supports Amanda's request to terminate the conservatorship," he said.

In August 2013, the Nickelodeon alum was placed under a conservatorship following a series of erratic behaviors, including allegedly setting a neighbor's driveway on fire. She was also in and out of mental health facilities as she also struggled with substance abuse.

In 2018, Amanda announced that she had been sober for four year, but two months later, it was reported that she relapsed due to stress.

However, a source told E! News that Amanda had been "doing better than ever" and became closer to her family amid the pandemic.

In the recent years, she has graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in 2019 and got engaged to Paul Michael, whom she met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. 

A hearing has been scheduled for Mar. 22.
