PS5 vs PS5 Slim: How different is Sony's new console?
Sony has confirmed that the heavily rumored PlayStation 5 Slim is due out this holiday season, but how different is it from the original PS5 released three years ago, really?
Like before, the tech giant on Oct. 10 announced two versions of its new console: the standard PS5 Slim and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition.
The revamped consoles were launched by Sony in a blog post that day and while the company doesn't officially call them "PS5 Slim," the tagline of the console goes, "Same Immersive Power. New Slimmer Size."
Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE Content Communications, said that the PS5 Slim series was created “to address the evolving needs of players.”
But for all of you gamers interested in buying a new gaming console this year, you may be wondering whether to buy PS5 that has been in the market since 2020, or opt for the new console coming out later.
Here is a comparison between the PS5 and the new PS5 Slim to help you with your decision.
Design
Size is the most significant difference between the newly announced PS5 Slim and the regular PS5.
Sony announced that the new PS5 Slim’s body had been reduced in volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% and 24% for its standard and digital editions.
This is also seen in the consoles' dimensions, with the PS5 Slim measuring approx. 358 × 96 × 216 mm (width × height × depth), with the digital version having just a slightly lower height at 80 mm. Meanwhile, the 2020-launched PS5 is larger than the two at approx. 390mm x 104mm x 260 mm.
Weight is also among the differences all PS5 consoles have. PS5 Slim is considerably lighter than the regular PS5, as the weight of the former is 3.2 kg, the Slim digital edition comes in at 2.6 kg, while the heaviest, the original PS5, comes in at 4.5 kg.
There are four separate cover panels for the PS5 Slim, with the top portion having a glossy finish while the bottom remains matte.
A variety of PS5 Slim Console Cover colors for the new model will be available starting early 2024, including an all-matte Black colorway and the Deep Earth Collection colors in Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver, priced at $54.99$ (P3,215.00).
The newer model's Digital Edition also allows adding an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive for $79.99 (P4,550.00).
Performance
The original PS5 console came out with an SSD capacity of 825GB, while the newly announced PS5 was announced to have a 1TB SSD storage, having a difference of at least 175GB between the two consoles.
Regardless, the consoles' specs are the same. All models are powered by a custom 7nm system on chip (SoC) with an 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU. This is paired with a similarly powerful AMD Radeon RDNA 2 graphics card (GPU)
System memory is also the same for all models, with an interface of16GB GDDR6/256-bit and a bandwidth of 448GB/s. The only difference is that the Slim versions come with a larger storage capacity than their predecessor.
Sony also noted in the blog post that once the current storage of the current PS5 has been sold out, the new PS5 Slim will become the only model available in the market.
Pricing
The recommended retail price of the new PS5 Slim will remain the same as the existing model it is replacing. It will cost $499 (P28,300.00) for the version with the disc drive or $449 (P25,500.00) for one without it.
It’s worth noting the all Playstation digital models have gone up in price with the introduction of the slim version. The original PS5 Digital Edition now costs $399.99 (P22,700.00), whereas the PS5 Slim Digital Edition costs $449.99 (P25,500.00). The slimmer PS5 Digital Edition with a disc drive also costs $50 (P2,850.00) more than the PS5 Digital Edition launched in 2020.
