Celebrities stand up for mother, son gunned down by cop in Tarlac

Published Dec 21, 2020 6:59 am

Heart-wrenching, disgusting, and pure evil.

These were the sentiments of some celebrities such as Maine Mendoza, Bela Padilla, Julie Anne San Jose, and Robi Domingo after watching the viral and disconcerting video showing Parañaque police officer Jonel Nuezca gunning down Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank Anthony Gregorio on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 20.

The video has been making the rounds online since Sunday evening, and has made the hashtags #JusticeForSonyaGregorio, #EndPoliceBrutality, #PULISANGTERORISTA, along with other keywords such as Jonel Nuezca, TO SERVE AND PROTECT, and Tarlac trend on Twitter.

Kapuso actress Maine Mendoza were among the first celebrities who voiced out her opinion on the distressing incident. “Hindi ko alam kung ano ang mararamdaman ko pero pwede bang barilin ka nalang sa harap ng anak mo? Sorry Lord, pero sobra kasi ‘yun, e. Sobra ‘yung ginawa niya. Hustisya para sa mag-inang Gregorio,” she wrote.

“Bihira nalang mag-check ng Twitter, ‘yun pa talaga bubungad sayo. Ang sakit talaga sa puso,” she added.

Maine’s fellow Kapuso star Julie Anne San Jose had the same sentiments. “Ang sakit sa puso. Napakaimoral. #StopTheKillingsPH,” she tweeted.

Kapuso star Kyline Alcantara, on the other hand, called out the daughter of Nuezca, a minor who also got herself involved in the encounter and can be heard in the video telling off Sonya that her father is a policeman. “No, hija. Your father is a criminal and you’re a spoiled brat that knows how to speak English, but doesn’t know right manners. Nakakagalit sobra. Ang sakit sa puso,” the actress said.

Gabbi Garcia likewise rebuked the daughter of Nuezca. “I hope your ‘policeman’ father rots in jail. He is a murderer,” the GMA-7 star tweeted.

Alessandra De Rossi, meanwhile, noted that the daughter's action was a result of her upbringing. “Poor child. ’Di naman Niya alam ang difference ng father, policeman, at mamamatay-tao. Magkakaiba ‘yun,” the actress tweeted. “Hindi malinaw na tinuro sa kanya ‘yun. Biktima din siya dahil mali ang alam niya. Heartbreaking. Sana may oras pa.’

Kapamilya actress Maris Racal couldn’t believe how “easy” it was for Nuezca to murder the mother and son. “Woke up to that video. Grabe, ganoon nalang kabilis talaga pumatay, no? #STOPTHEKILLINGS,” she tweeted.

TV host Robi Domingo is “disgusted” over the idea that the Philippine National Police is allegedly failing in their mission “to serve and protect” the Filipino people. “Where’s the commitment to serve and protect!? This disgusts me,” the Kapamilya star said. “‘Tapos we’ll hear the words , ‘We’ll investigate it.’ We need justice. Filipinos deserve better,” he added.

Like Robi, ABS-CBN actress Angel Locsin wants the police to live by their oath, as she tweeted, “Good cops should condemn bad cops. Remember the motto, #ToServeAndToProtect.”

Bela Padilla said what Nuezca did was “pure evil.”

The 46-year-old Nuezca is now under police custody after he surrendered at the Rosales, Pangasinan police station an hour after the incident. He will reportedly face murder charges over the killing of Sonya, 52, and Frank, 25.

Gen. Debold Sinas, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said that "the evidence is very strong against him that is why he was already under our custody and will be charged."
