Ateneo is highest-ranked Philippine school in 2023 Asian rankings
Ateneo de Manila University has emerged as the highest-ranked Philippine school in the latest Asia University ranking of Times Higher Education (THE).
The United Kingdom-based group placed the private institution located in Quezon City at the 84th spot, and is the only Philippine institution in the top 100.
THE based its ranking on five categories, namely, teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (2.5%), and international outlook (7.5%).
Ateneo had the following scores:
- Overall Score: 47.4
- Teaching: 38.3
- Citations: 97.0
- Industry Income: 37.6
- International Outlook: 31.8
- Research: 11.6
As for the other top three schools in the Philippines, the University of the Philippines was placed between the 201 to 250 mark while De La Salle University was in the 501 to 600 bracket. The University of Santo Tomas was meanwhile given a "reporter status," meaning that the institution was active in the ranking process but "did not meet the eligibility criteria to receive a rank," according to THE.
Mapúa University, which specializes in engineering and other technology-centered programs, was in the 601+ bracket.
Five other institutions appeared with a reporter status, including Cebu Technological University, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Visayas State University.
In a statement, Ateneo president Fr. Roberto Yap attributed the ranking to "years of hard work of the entire community—from faculty and researchers, to staff, professionals, and administrators, to [their] students."
"This only encourages us to further work on our shared mission to engage with society to affect positive change in the world," he added.
The 2023 ranking includes 669 universities from 31 territories, with China's Tsinghua University and Peking University taking the first and second positions for the fourth year in a row.
Prior to this, Ateneo led the Philippines' list of schools in the 2023 THE World Impact Rankings, wherein it appeared as the highest-rated school among 29 colleges and universities in the country in terms of its contributions to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
