Parts of Luzon have been suffering heavy rains and severe flooding amid the onslaught of super typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon.
As of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) declared Carina a super typhoon, raising a red warning alert in Metro Manila, Rizal, Bataan, Zambales, Bulacan, and Pampanga.
Shortly after, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced that the whole of Metro Manila is now placed under a state of calamity. Several roads in places like Quezon City, Manila, Malabon, Navotas, and Marikina have been submerged and unpassable.
This also forced residents to evacuate for their safety. In Quezon City alone, Mayor Joy Belmonte reported that the city's 154 evacuation centers are now occupied by 22,000 evacuees as 80 out of its 143 barangays are flooded.
As per the Philippine News Agency (PNA) report, 528 families in central Luzon are currently staying in evacuation centers due to severe flooding.
Amid the intensifying typhoon on Wednesday, residents in metro Manila waded through knee and waist-deep floods to buy and stock up goods.
Food content creator Ninong Ry updated his followers with the massive flooding he's experiencing in his hometown Malabon, affecting his kitchen, living room, and office.
The continuous, heavy rains also brought severe flooding in North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) - Paso de Blas, Valenzuela that reached as high as an average person's height. This caused traffic from both northbound and southbound lanes to standstill.
Another social media user also shared a massive flooding in Vito Cruz corner on Taft Avenue, where it reached a knee-deep level. Some vehicles were also seen half submerged in the flood.
Super typhoon Carina is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday morning, July 25, and will make landfall in Taiwan. The southwest monsoon or habagat, meanwhile, is expected to continue the moderate to intense rainfall in parts of Luzon until Friday.
Malacañang has also suspended classes at all levels and work in government offices in NCR, Regions II, and IV-A on July 25 to aid the rescue, recovery, relief, and rehabilitation efforts of the government.
